What is Christian Science?

“…the law of God, the law of good…” in the words of Mary Baker Eddy, the devout Christian woman who discovered Christian Science in 1866.  It is a metaphysical system of prayer-based healing, grounded in the life and works of Christ Jesus, and which teaches how to apply the law of God to our everyday lives.  And, thereby, we find or experience solutions to meet our needs whether physical, financial, relationship, educational, employment, or business related, etc.  It is also the name of a religious denomination that was founded by Mary Baker Eddy in 1879 when she established the Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.  It includes The Mother Church which has members and branch Churches of Christ, Scientist around the world.   

What is a Christian Science Practitioner?

A person committed to serving God and mankind and who makes himself/herself available to respond to prayer requests with prayer specific to each individual's needs.  They serve those of all faiths and those who may have no religious background.  They communicate 

over the phone, via email, or meet in person -- possibly in an office or at a place designated by both parties.  These communications--both initial and follow-on discussions, include recommendations for study of the Bible and religious writings applicable to an individual's search for solutions to challenges, problems, issues they may be facing.  

Do Christian Science practitioners charge for their services?  

Yes – they are self-employed and so are paid by the individuals who request their services, not by the Church.  Here are some guidelines for fees and payment:

Prayer: specific to a particular need on a given day (discount applied for prayer requested for extended periods); communications: by phone--included; personal visits--subject to location.  Active duty military personnel are served without charge and students at a discount.  All others are on a case by case basis.  Fees and payment plans are discussed in order to meet individual needs and situations.
